Pacific Island countries are faced with many challenges, including climate change, poverty, and unemployment. As a major partner, China has shared its experience in poverty alleviation with Pacific Island countries to help them achieve progress. CGTN's Guo Linjie has more.

Over the years, China has provided support and assistance to Pacific Island countries through multilateral cooperation mechanisms. One of them is the Poverty Alleviation and Cooperative Development Center. Since its launch two years ago, the center has facilitated online training and study tours on poverty alleviation strategies for Pacific Island countries.

ZHUANG PEIFEN, Head of the China-Pacific Island Countries Poverty Alleviation and Cooperative Development Center "We have structured our training programs around four key areas: agriculture, industrial development, tourism, and social security. Currently, our primary focus is on agricultural poverty reduction. We have conducted several training sessions on this, reaching over 100 participants from more than 10 countries."

The center has contributed to expanding business ties, and facilitating cultural and people-to-people exchanges between China and Pacific Island countries. It also helped promote international cooperation on Juncao technology, a winning model for addressing food security in these countries.

GUO LINJIE, Fuzhou, Fujian Province "These aren't just ordinary plants – but are 'Miracle Grass,' or Juncao. With Juncao technology, farmers can grow mushrooms on dried and chopped grass, like this."

The Juncao technology was invented by Chinese scientist Lin Zhanxi. For more than 20 years, Lin's team has been providing seeds and technical training to Pacific Island nations.

LIN ZHANSEN, Leader, China-Pacific Island Countries' Juncao Technology Demonstration Center "We not only provide theoretical teaching, but also hands-on training. Juncao technology was unfamiliar to the locals at first, but it has now become a household name."

LIN DONGMEI, Deputy Head, National Engineering Research Center of Juncao Technology "We are training about three thousand to four thousand people a year, globally now. About thirty percent of them are from the Pacific island countries."

According to local farmers, they can generate income in 7 to 10 days after planting mushroom substrate packs.

SERUWAIA WAITI KABUKABU, Fijian farmer "Mushroom farming is simple and easy to learn, yet with fast and good results. I earned $2,500 from the first batch of mushroom substrates and bought appliances, mats, a cooking pot, food and clothes for my family."

In Fiji, a farmer can harvest 1,200 kilograms of mushrooms a year on only 10 square meters of land, generating about $9,000. In Papua New Guinea, by the end of 2023, Juncao technology had been disseminated to eight provinces, benefiting more than 60,000 people. China has implemented nearly 500 projects across Pacific Island nations, and also trained about 10,000 local professionals in various fields. Through collaborative initiatives and shared expertise, these partnerships are helping Pacific Island countries fight poverty.
